01 · The problem

Good food is lost before it ever reaches a plate.

At harvest, smallholder farmers often have more produce than the market can absorb. Without storage or processing, surplus spoils within days or is sold at distress prices. Conventional drying burns fossil fuel, and buyers rarely know where their food really comes from.

  • Surplus spoils

Post-harvest losses hit smallholder farmers hardest, wasting food, water and months of labour.

  • Farmers earn less

Distress sales and long chains of middlemen take most of the value of every harvest.

  • Supply chains are opaque

Buyers cannot verify origin, quality or how their food was processed.

What if the sun could fix that?

02 · The solution: solar dryers

Sunlight is the new preservative.

Our solar dryers use free, clean energy to gently remove moisture from fresh produce, right at the farm gate. Surplus that would have rotted becomes clean-label food with a long shelf life.

  1. Capture the sun

A covered drying chamber traps solar heat. No grid power, no diesel.

  2. Circulate warm air

Gentle airflow dries produce evenly on clean trays, shielded from dust and insects.

  3. Keep the goodness

Low-temperature drying preserves nutrients, colour and real fruit taste.

  4. Pack at source

Processed and packed where it is grown, so value stays in the village.

Solar dryer programme

We don't just buy dried food. We put dryers in farmers' hands.

InstaFarm installs solar dryers with farmer groups and women's collectives, trains them to dry, grade and pack, then buys the output at fair prices.

  • Less waste

Surplus harvest becomes shelf-stable stock instead of spoilage.

  • More income

Dried produce sells for more, on the farmer's timeline, not the market's.

  • Clean energy

Zero fuel costs and a lower carbon footprint from farm to shelf.

  • Every batch on record

Each dryer is logged, so every pack can be traced back to it.

02 · Inside the solar dryer

How sunlight becomes shelf life.

A simple, rugged design that any farmer group can run. The sun provides the heat, and natural airflow does the rest.

Cross-section of an InstaFarm solar dryer: a glazed collector heats fresh air, which flows into a cabinet, rises through four trays of drying produce and leaves through a chimney vent.

Moist air out

Fresh air in

  1. Sun heats the collector

A dark plate under glass turns sunlight into heat.

  2. Warm air flows in

Heated air moves up the collector into the chamber.

  3. Moisture is drawn out

Warm air rises through the trays, gently drying the produce.

  4. Humid air escapes

Moist air leaves through the vent, pulling in fresh air.

From harvest to pack

A simpler way from harvest to market.

We help farmer groups turn surplus produce into shelf-stable, high-value products using solar drying.

  1. Harvest surplus

Ripe produce collected from partner farms.

  2. Wash & sort

Cleaned and graded for quality by hand.

  3. Slice

Cut evenly so every piece dries at the same rate.

  4. Load trays

Spread in a single layer on food-grade trays.

  5. Solar dry

Low, steady heat for 12–30 hours, by produce.

  6. Grade & pack

Checked for moisture, packed and batch-coded.

Traditional open-air drying

Traditional methods lead to high losses.

  • Exposed to dust, birds and insects
  • Uneven drying, easily spoiled by rain
  • Colour and nutrients fade in direct sun
  • No record of how it was processed

InstaFarm solar dryer

Cleaner drying. Greater value.

  • Enclosed, hygienic drying chamber
  • Faster, more even drying in all sunny weather
  • Keeps natural colour, flavour and nutrients
  • Every batch logged and traceable

02 · Before & after

Same harvest. Two very different endings.

Five days after harvest, surplus produce left in the open is spoiling. The same harvest in a solar dryer becomes clean-label food, ready to sell. Drag to compare.

Day 5Shelf-stable, clean-label, ready to sell.

  • Fresh surplus

    Spoils within days

Without storage or processing, ripe fruit is lost soon after harvest.

  • Solar-dried

    Shelf-stable for months

Low moisture keeps it safe, with no preservatives added.

  • For the farmer

    Surplus becomes income

Produce that would be thrown away is sold at a fair price.

03 · The people

Women at the heart of the supply chain.

Many of the hands that grow, dry and pack our produce belong to women. We work with women-led groups so that the skills, the income and the decisions stay with them.

  • Skills that stay

Training in solar drying, grading, packaging and digital selling tools.

  • Fair, direct income

Direct market access means farmers keep more of every sale.

  • Dignified work, close to home

Processing at source creates local jobs in rural communities.

We used to throw away so much. They taught me how to dry, package, and even use digital tools. I feel more in control of my farm and my future.

04 · The process & traceability

From farm to pack, every step on record.

Produce is dried, graded and packed where it is grown. Every batch carries a record of the farm and dryer it came from, so anyone can check the journey. Try it with the code on a pack.

  1. Source

  2. Solar-dry

Low-heat drying keeps nutrients, colour and flavour.

  3. Pack at source
